How to Fix a Badge Reel

How to Fix a Badge Reel

MavsksnMasbkdbx |

A badge reel is a handy tool for keeping IDs, keys, or access cards accessible, but it can malfunction over time. Below are common issues and solutions to repair your badge reel:

Common Problems & Fixes

1. Cord Won’t Retract

Cause: The internal spring is broken, tangled, or dislodged.

Fix:

Disassemble the Housing:

Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry open the plastic/metal housing (if possible).

Avoid forcing it—some reels are sealed and not meant to be opened.

Inspect the Spring:

If the spring is loose, rewind it around the spindle.

If broken, replace it with a similar-sized spring (from a hardware store or donor reel).

Reassemble: Snap the housing back together and test retraction.

2. Broken or Frayed Cord

Fix:

Remove the Old Cord:

Detach the cord from the clip/hook (use pliers to open the metal ring).

Unwind the cord from the spring mechanism inside the housing.

Replace the Cord:

Thread a new nylon/elastic cord (1–2 mm thickness) through the housing and spring.

Secure one end to the spring spindle and the other to the clip.

Test: Ensure smooth retraction and adjust cord length if needed.

3. Loose or Broken Clip

Fix:

Replace the Clip:

Use pliers to open the split ring connecting the clip to the cord.

Attach a new lobster clasp, carabiner, or safety pin.

Reinforce Weak Joints: Apply a small drop of super glue or epoxy to loose connections.

4. Stuck Mechanism (Dirt/Debris)

Fix:

Clean the Housing:

Blow compressed air into the reel to dislodge dust.

Use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the spring.

Lubricate: Add a tiny amount of silicone lubricant to the spring for smoother retraction.

Tools You’ll Need

Small screwdrivers

Pliers

Replacement cord/clip/spring

Super glue or epoxy

Compressed air

Silicone lubricant

When to Replace Instead of Repair

The housing is cracked or irreparably damaged.

Replacement parts are unavailable (common for cheap reels).

The reel has sentimental value (consider professional repair services).

Preventive Tips

Avoid over-stretching the cord.

Clean the reel monthly to prevent dirt buildup.

Opt for high-quality reels with metal springs for durability.

By addressing these issues, you can extend the life of your badge reel. For most basic models, however, replacement (often under $5) is quicker and more cost-effective. Save repairs for specialty or sentimental reels!
